I signed up for a Miata time trial event. Don't really know why. I have not been there since Leadfoot, and have never driven it in this direction. This could be very embarrassing.
On the other hand, if the car acts up there should be some people there who could give me some input on what is going on with it.

November 30. Ever driven this track in this direction? Think you can do it in 1:23 in my car? I am debating on adding a splitter and wing to help out. I would like the car to be competitive, even if I am not. http://miatachallenge.com/

I think Perry ran a 1:32 or 1:33 in his S2000 4 months before he wrecked, but that was in the CCW direction.

The guy who is most likely to win has already run a 1:25 in a newly built, untested car. He should have it finished by this event.
I know I don't stand a chance. Even if I were to drop down to the street class I doubt I would be competitive. To many people trying this with way more experience than I have.

Well this ain't going to happen.
I was letting the car warm up today and noticed a ticking sound. I went to try and locate the source of this noise and the car went bang and died.
Checked the compression and it was way off.
Checked the timing and neither of the camshafts was aligned with the crank.
Pulled the valve cover and there were metal shavings everywhere.
Pulled the camshafts and there was metal missing from the bearing surfaces.
I think I was not getting enough oil flow. This caused a camshaft to seize up momentarily, which caused the timing to jump.
Anyways, I now need a new head for the Maita. I won't know about the bottom end until I can pull it apart, but I am guessing it is trashed too.

Sorry to hear about your Halloween, John. That was a nasty trick for the Miata to play on you.

I have it all most totally disassembled. I think that the bottom end will just need a rebuild. I will start looking for a head on Monday. There is a place close by that rebuilds engines. I think they will pick the car up and drop it off. Past that I will get them to do the basics and I will finish it off.
It turns out that I crossed the oil lines running to my remote filter. Filters are designed to only flow one direction, so the engine was getting no oil, yet had good pressure at the gauge (which is on the inflow to the filter. If it had been on the outflow, I would have had 0 pressure and that would have been a warning.)

No oil = bad news
I hope the damage is limited.

I have gone real cheap.
I smoothed out the damaged bearings with a dremel tool. Going to rebuild the motor in the car. Only going to hone the cylinders, new rings, bearings and gaskets. Total cost should be under $300. Would not do this to a daily driver, but it is not a big deal for me to replace the head if it does not work. I am only looking to get another year out of this motor.

Decided to do it right. Engine is going in to the machine shop tomorrow. Bought a used head. Do it once instead of twice.

It is totally back together and running. I let it run until it almost overheated... and then I fixed the problem with the fan wiring. I let it run again until the fans came on. Problem fixed.
I then did a compression check. 180 psi on all 4. It may get better after the rings seat.
So I just did a quick drive. Solid motor mounts are brutal in the worst way. They may come out. There are just too many things inside a car that vibrate... LOUDLY. Not fun even on a car that only gets a little street action.
I won't be running the supercharger for a while, and it feels like it making about 70 hp. My intake is not good for NA operation. It will not rev at all, but that is OK for the first few hundred miles.

Dude, what class will you be in now w/o the supercharger? You might not have to lift out of the throttle the entire lap

It still has the supercharger. I just need to put 500 miles on it before hooking up the belt. NA it has to pull air through the supercharger which is why it is so slow without it.
