My car has developed a creak in the rear suspension this last week. I'm wondering if it's definitely the shocks since they are still the originals. John mentioned maybe the bushings are worn out. You hear it over slow bumps, like pulling into a driveway, going over a speed bump, etc. You can't hear it while on the road. My car needs so much maintenance right now. It is painful to think how much money it will cost, especially since I am very low on cash right now and it should all be done before Nov 18 for Sears Point. It needs:
New shocks and struts - done Tranny serviced - done Rear serviced - done Brake fluid flushed - done clutch fluid flushed - didn't need to be done oil changed - done K&N filter cleaned - done New windshield
ANd probably a couple of other things that I can't think of.

Like bushings?
New polyu bushings would make a big difference, but they can really creak badly. Hopefully you will get to hear the Miata creak down the road someday. Figure on about 20 hours to replace all of the bushings, it is not a small job.
I could help you do all those things, except the windshield.

I have neither the know-how nor the tools to do any of this stuff.

Add a wheel alignment to my list. It hasn't been done since April. Even though it tracks completely straight, I'd rather have a brand new alignment going on the track.

Definitely get the alignment done before the next track day. The gearbox and transaxel oils should get traded out too. If you go with the Redline stuff, buy MT90 for your tranny and 75W90NS for the diff. These will provide max protection under track conditions that produce lots of heat in the gears.

Maybe you should just borrow Perry's car. I hear it is a nice low-miles model that needs to be broken in. It would give you an idea of how the car will feel when you replace all of those parts.
Do get it aligned, but I would just do it at your neighborhood tire store. When you replace the bushings, you will have to get it done again, so I would not go nuts taking it to the best guy in town.

Perry would never let me use his car on track and I would never drive it just because of that off-chance that something happens.

That's true, but only because my car is irreplaceable. I doubt I could find another Spa Yellow '02 with such low miles and in such good condition. If it were a different S and you could afford to replace it then you could drive it on track, Vin.

I was kidding. For that matter, ya'll could have suggested that he use my car... but mine needs some work, too. I am still using those old rear pads of Perry's from Laguna Seca.

My mechanic looked at the shocks today and saw some buildup from a leak. He thinks I need them.

Ooh...and even more important, when my mechanic crawled under the back of the car, he said my tires were shot on the inside. I took them off and looked at them and they were BALD. I'm running slicks. I just got these brand new in April and it cost $770 for 2 rears because everyone was sold out except this little tire shop. I'm estimating they have between 11-12k miles on them since I've driven about 17k so far this year. The fronts STILL have plenty of tread left at 37k miles.
