I know of auto-xes here at Qualcomm stadium and I know Larry Martinez goes to them in Camarillo. I don't know how far away that is from you.
Auto-x will teach you really good car control and will help you if you transition to the track. If you do track first and then try to transition to auto-x, I think it is going to be more difficult to pick up.

yeah exactly y i want to start with autox first... i just dont trust myself enough to jump on a track yet. Qualcomm is closer to me than Camarillo, but even that is still an hour away! Ill look into costs and if Ryan doesnt crap i might swing it next yr

Costs are relatively low for Auto-x, I believe typically under $50. Track days are much more expensive, but you are given a thousand times more track time. You might get 3 or 4 runs in a day for auto-x lasting about a minute each time, but you'll get 2 hours or more of track time with the more expensive cost.

http://www.americanauto-x.com/schedule/Faster & longer tracks than SCCA. $40 + half a day volunteering earns you 5 runs. Fun group of people with some great cars.

Castle Airport (the former Castle Airforce Base) is 30 or so mile south of Modesto and just north of Merced on Hwy 99. This time of year, once the rain has begun, you have to be aware of the tule fog. It's that kind of thing that cause a 100+ car pile up on Hwy 99 last week.

Is Merced really that far from Orange County? It's just north of Fresno.
